What You’ll Take Away From This Blog
  • School readiness is more than just the learning – it’s about developing the physical, emotional, social, and cognitive foundations for it
  • Movement builds brain connections
  • Exercise strengthens coordination, posture, and endurance, helping children sit, write, and play with confidence.
  • Purposeful, play-based activity supports developing children, preparing them to thrive in the classroom and beyond

Starting school is a big milestone – not just for your child, but for the whole family. Behind the excitement of new uniforms, lunchboxes, and classrooms is an important question: “Is my child ready?”

School readiness goes far beyond knowing the alphabet or counting to ten. It’s about the whole child – how they move, play, communicate, regulate their emotions, and respond to new challenges. These foundations are built through one of the most natural and powerful tools children have: movement.

That’s where an Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) can make a world of difference. Exercise for school readiness is not just about running laps or lifting weights – it’s about purposeful play designed to strengthen your child’s body, brain, and confidence so they can walk through those school gates feeling ready and capable.
Exercise Physiology Enhances School Readiness

  • Improves Executive Higher Brain Functioning

Movement drives brain development. Through play and structured exercise, children strengthen the neural pathways responsible for focus, memory, problem-solving, and self-control. Movement activities can help to develop the mental “air traffic control system” essential for learning.

Try it: Set up a mini obstacle course at home using cushions, tunnels, or chairs to climb over and crawl under. Add counting or colour naming at each station for an extra cognitive boost!

  • Strengthens Language and Communication

Exercise isn’t just physical – it’s interactive. Activities that involve listening, following instructions, turn-taking, and storytelling enhance both receptive and expressive language. As children move, talk, and engage, they build comprehension, vocabulary, and social confidence – vital skills for classroom participation.

Try it: Hot and Cold – hide an object and guide your child to find it using clues like “warmer” or “colder” to practice their language comprehension. Then get them to guide you!

  • Supports Emotional Regulation

Movement releases “happy hormones” like endorphins and serotonin, which naturally improve mood and reduce stress. Guided physical activity teaches children how to channel energy, manage frustration, and self-soothe. Learning when to speed up and when to slow down through play helps develop the emotional balance needed for a busy school day.

Try it: Emotional Storytelling – tell a story where your child acts out different emotions (happy, scared, tired, excited). It helps them connect words to feelings and builds empathy and communication.

  • Enhances Physical Strength and Coordination

Before a child can hold a pencil, they need shoulder stability. Before they can sit and focus, they need core strength. Exercise strengthens fine and gross motor skills, posture, balance, and endurance – all essential for learning, writing, and classroom participation.

Try it: Shapes Pilates – get your child on their hands and knees and kick one leg back at a time like a donkey! Lie flat on their back then fold up like a page of a book to touch their toes!

Over the next few weeks and in the lead up to the next school year, we will be releasing blog content covering these key areas of school readiness in more detail – executive function, behaviour and language, emotional regulation and physical readiness.

If your little legend needs support in getting them school ready or adapting to the new school life, a session with an Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) can make a world of difference.
